NXCAM HXR-NXU: How to backup & re-shoot last clip with Remote Control unit?
When shooting a number of short clips/stories in a studio setting with a teleprompter… and stopping the camera between each one
And with the talent standing in front of a chroma key screen
and the studio-tech/camera operator is (sitting across the studio) operating the camera with the Remote Control unit that came with the cam..
And you are attempting to capture each story as an individual clip for later editing and chroma keying in the background… etc…
and the talent blows a line…
Is there an easy way using the remote control to stop the camera… then back it up… and re-shoot the last clip… recording over the blown attempt?

Why in the world would you like to go back and record over the last clip? I recommend you NEVER EVER EVER erase a clip in the field. It is too easy to accidentally erase the wrong one.
Just tell the talent to count 3, 2, 1, and then start talking again.
Then when you are editing you through away the bad takes and piece together the good ones.

Hello John, and thanks for the help. We have had our NXCAM for awhile but the project got delayed and we are just starting to use it… and will probably will have more questions… so I thank you for your kind assistance in advance.
In this case we are in a studio environment and your suggestion is how we have done it in the past… but it may save time if the camera operator/studio tech (sitting at a console in the studio operating both the teleprompter and the camera remotely) could just click a single button to back up to the beginning of the last clip and start recording again from there…
Reason… they know right then it was a bad take… but later in post production they will have to watch every single clip start to end to see if it was ‘the’ good one… then process it…
But, if it is not easy with the remote control… then it probably won’t do us any good.
I have another question but will put it in a separate post with a proper subject.

There are safer ways to mark the correct take.
Here are a few ideas.
1. Edit from the end. The last take is almost always the right one.
2. Have the talent say take 2, take 3, etc when starting over and have the operator jot down the take numbers and circle the good one.
3. Put the camera timecode in free run mode ( and set it to be equal to a 24 hour time clock.) Then have the operator right down the timecode of the bad takes.
4. Have one audio channel on the talent, have the second connected to a microphone that the camera operator has. The camera operator says bad take into that audio channel. or good take. Then during the editing process, the editor looks for the voice in the second audio channel and uses it as a signal.John Lenihan

Those are good ideas John. We will experiment and choose the one that works best for us.
