I have been doing NLE for about 15 years … long enough to have LOTS of scars from poorly performance, unreliable hardware rigs. Editing on today’s PCs is so much better!

I am upgrading my desktop to a new Dell XPS 9000 and need some advice on the graphics card. The specs on the Dell are:

    Intel Core i7-920 processor
    12 GB RAM
    Dual 30″ 2560 x 1600 monitors

I use Adobe CS4 Professional Master Suite. The applications I use heavily are:

    After Effects
    Premiere Pro
    Soundbooth
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    Bridge
    Media Encoder

After searching the Creative Cow site it seems like the nVidia Quadro FX would be a good choice. But, which one? The four that will support by system (dual monitor, dual-DVI adapter) are:

    FX 5800 ($2,100)
    FX 5600 ($1,000)
    FX 4600 ($ 600)
    FX 3700 ($ 375)

I can see the specs online, but I have no idea which specs matter. I am leery of the FX 5800 … at 188 watts I half expect it to burst into flames! The FX 4600 seems like it might be the sweet spot)

    Comments? Suggestions?

I have PP 4.2.1, Win 7 x64, 32 GB ram, dual Quad core Xeon PC with an nvidia FX4600. Everything runs fine.

The FX4600 is not currently supported when CS5 with the MPE comes out later this year (although I think it will work).

    Keep that in mind.
