nVidia GTX 580
Posted by Ryan Snook on May 13, 2012 at 3:56 pmCan us Mac Pro users (3,1 – 4,1 – 5,1) use any GTX 580 GPU sold on say – newegg (as long as its externally powered) with the nVidia drivers successfully in Lion and have Resolve be polite? Or do we need that flashed pricy one from macvidcards?
How is the form factor? Fit nice but snug like our GTX470?
Thanks!

May 13, 2012 at 6:38 pmAnyone up for answering the more specific question of how does someone sell a card flashed for Mac for $200 more than New Retail version of the card, if the retail card works with nVidia’s Mac Drivers?
Pros, Cons?
I’d love to feel lucky like the other 29 posts that came before me that weren’t told to search for a generic answer answering 1/3 of my post!

May 13, 2012 at 6:42 pmIt has been said many times in those threads :
The flashed will allow to boot OSX using that card and also use full 16x lane speed (maybe not useful in resolve )
Using the midis driver and non flashes card , there is always the risk that midis driver won’t support those adds anymore ..g

May 14, 2012 at 8:49 pmWhatever you do, be absolutely CERTAIN that you have enough power for a 580.
I have sold 2 of them and already someone has blown one up.
He got an entry level Cyclone chassis and used a single 6 pin power plug through splitters for both the 6 pin and 8 pin on the 580.
Result, one dead 580.
It seems they are even more sensitive to power needs then 480s, which is odd.
The cards are available from Newegg or TigerDirect or many retailers. If you don’t think you need an EFI one, by all means just get a PC one.

May 14, 2012 at 11:28 pmI mean I like the EFI features and all but the $300 extra seems just a tad steep. I have a GTX 470 that I bought from you – I’d really love to trade that back in as the 580 would be replacing it. I want to dual boot my Mac Pro (3,1) in OSX and Windows 7. Would a non EFI 580 show no screen to select the O/S when holding down alt on startup?
Is this the only tool (short of an entire PC power supply sitting next to me plugged in) capable of running the 580 (power-wise) on a Mac Pro?
or is there something else?

May 14, 2012 at 11:38 pmJust went from 200 to 300 in a few minutes huh?
Well, neither number is correct and I am not holding a gun to anyone’s head to buy one.
If you use a GT120 for GUI, then you don’t need to use EFI on 580, the PCIE 2.0 thing only affects high bandwidth transfers.
You would be best to just get one from Newegg if you are convinced from the get go that EFI/PCIE 2.0 is a waste of money.

May 14, 2012 at 11:49 pmFew days actually… No I saw the clever $799 on the price tag and thought – as a consumer would of 7, vs. the $800 that it is. But anyways…
I’m not at all convinced that anything you are selling is a waste of money – i’m ignorant on the matter and am trying to learn the value of what you are offering. Basic Pro’s and Cons. For the Mac side, yes I would be using the GT120 as my GUI and the 580 as the CUDA processor in resolve. However, when I boot into windows for gaming I’d obviously be using the 580 entirely and not the GT120 at all. But if I cannot boot into windows due to a black screen without the GT120 im SOL aren’t I? Unless I can boot into Windows…
Trying to learn is all. If I thought it was a waste and was already convinced why would I be wasting time on here?
Trade in.

May 15, 2012 at 12:34 amSomething you need to understand about Ebay is that sellers pay commission based on FInal Value.
If I buy something for $550 and sell it on Ebay for $550 I will pay $30 or so to Ebay and then 3-4% to Paypal. So, by selling something for what it cost me I will lose around $50. I would need to sell the item for $600 to break even.
The IRS gets a cut of profit as well.
I would much rather that you bought a 580 and tried it out as is.
If you want/need the extra functionality I can offer send me the card and I will modify it.
