Nvidia GTX 285 vs FX4800

Thanks for the info. Sadly it’s looking more and more like my 2007 Mac Pro is to dated for a Resolve setup and I may have to upgrade. Much to soon if you ask me. Running my monitors off of the second slot…a 4x slot…with an injected driver to run a GTX285 in the main slot…doesn’t sound promising for GUI graphics performance, Maya, and After Effects work. Hmmm. May be selling my workstation.

On the system that was there at the BM stand at NAB, there were two graphics cards in the MacPro. One wss a stock GT 120 that had the 24″ display running off it. And the other was a nVidia GTX 285 with no display connected.

The second monitor showed the output and that was being fed off BM HD Extreme card who’s output was connected to a HD Link Pro who out was connected to this monitor.

The rep at the stand told me (if memory serves me right) that the GTX 285 was the ‘processor’ for all the grading computations. And thus it effectively replaces all those ‘Power plant’ or ‘transformer’ cards in older Resolves.

This GTX 285 looks like the same one available on the Apple store

This is correct. The GTX285 is what we used at NAB. Lower cost, more CUDA cores, but lower RAM on board compared to the Nvidia FX4800 which is compatible with Smoke on Mac.

The GT120 mainly handles the GUI display and currently is the only other graphics card supported, and is required.

The two remaining slots can be used for the DeckLink HD Extreme 3D and if you like a Fibre Channel card (Atto) or the Apple RAID controller. We have qualified the FC to a StorNext SAN and are working on other drive subsystem testing.

Too me that sounds like the GFX card is used like a Powercore or UAD-1 (Audiogeeks know what i am talking about) , like a DSP card for sound processing.
So the actual interface GUI can probably run on anything, the image processing is done in the CUDA pipeline.
We have multiple Quadros at work and the only benefit for us is the SDI out and the SDI daughter board that only connects to the Quadro.
The grading itself can easily be gone on a Geforce.
Also for 3DD I did not find any benefits and Smoke runs fine on my ATI 4850 too.
Heck, it runs fine on the laptop for short fixes and -;)

In other words, you’re saying we need a GeForce GT 120, which requires at least a Mac Pro early 2009 model?

Interesting.. if so I won’t be able to run Resolve from day one.. Better start saving up for a new Mac Pro asap then.

Sorry if this has been talked about. But will the Red Rocket card have any acceleration value in the resolve system? If so, I want to keep it in the box but then I run out of slots quickly. If not then I may put it to a separate box just to do dailies or conversions.

I have Mac Pro, model 4.1 with Radeon HD4870 and I am planning to replace the video card to nVidia GTX 285.

Is it necessary to use two video cards, or I can run just one Radeon HD4870?
