  • nVidia GTX – 285 | Not getting real time playback of R3D @ Quarter Res Config

Posted by Craig Harris on November 2, 2010 at 2:52 pm

I am not getting real time playback of R3D files at quarter res with my Nvidia GTX-285. Here’s what I’m running in my system…

    – 2×2.26 GHz Quad Core tower
    – Sonnetech Fusion Raid w/ATTO R380 (Speed test says I’m getting 650 MB/s)
    – PCIe Slot 1 (GTX-285) PCIe Slot 2 (GT-120)

I can get real time playback at eighth res, but that’s pretty poor quality.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Craig,

Here are a few questions to try to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Is your system res set to HD?

    2. Do you have 6GB or 8GB RAM? (for optimum performance, have pairs of 3 on Nehalem)

    3. What FPS are you getting at 1/4th res?

    4. What is the resolution of the Red files?

    5. Is your decode set to RED defaults? Perhaps, there is some clip processing being applied which is slowing it down.

    6. Do you get RT playback with HD DPX files?

    1. System is set to HD.

    2. Running 12 GB of ram.

    3. I am getting 17 FPS at quarter res.

    4. Red files are 4K 16:9 @ 23.976

    5. The Decode is set to: Camera Metadata

    6. I do get real time playback with HD DPX files.

    OK. Just found something here.

Yesterday I added the following debug code: DPDecoder.Count = 0

Just as a test, I removed the code and now have real time playback at Quarter Res Good.
I believe that code was a fix for importing R3D files into the media pool. I’m not sure what that code would cause a lack in performance…

    4. Can you test with “4,096×2,048” to see if it makes any difference.

    5. Can you try setting it to RED defaults to see if it makes any difference.

Ok. Having that in would definitely cause a drop in performance. For now, you will have to run with that.

With the next update (7.0.3), you can remove that setting.
