Just trying to create big chisled rock look formed by numbers. Is proanimator the best way and layer maps? .. Thoughts

In my opinion yes!
Could you post a visual? Or explain a little more?
You don’t necessarily need to use the layer mapping technique. The key is to have a good texture & bump map.
Give us more details and we should be able to help you get this done.
