Numbers Effect
So I am having an issue with my countdown effect while using AE CS3. I created the countdown successfully but I want to cover up the Hours place because its only a 5 minute countdown. However when I try to apply a mask to cover up the hours place it doesn’t take. I tried all the options for the mask (add, subtract, intersect, etc) but nothing affects its.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Or a way around it?

You will need to precompose the layer with the Numbers effect THEN apply the mask. AE’s default rendering pipeline/order for layers that are not continuously rasterized dictates that Masks, Effects and then Transforms are rendered in the specified order.
In effect, your mask was made useless as the Numbers effect wrote its output over the mask. Take note that most plugins that create new data will override the layer’s mask attributes. This means plugins found within the Generate and Text categories will almost always override any mask(s0 that you may have on that layer.
