Is it possible to control the transparency with a null object. I know you can scale, rotate etc but i have no luck with transparency. Is there a work around?

Add a Slider Control effect to the Null object, then just pick whip the child objects opacity(alt-click opacity stopwatch to enable expression) to the slider.
