  • Nucleo, Nucleo Pro with standard Network Rendering

    Hi,
I’ve just bought a 1.86Ghz 6300 Intel CoreDuo2 box and am amazed with the performance increase from the trial version of Nucleo. No joke, I’m seeing just under 300% performance compared to without Nucleo on some projects!

Now I’m trying to decide whether to go Nucleo or Nucleo Pro. The thing is I often use my other lesser machines (2.8Ghz P4, 3Ghz P4, 2Ghz P4) to render AE projects using AE’s builtin Network Rendering ability.

How does AE’s builtin Network Rendering cohabitate with Nucleo Pro? When I want to Network Render my project should I even use Nucleo Pro? Can I set it up to look for already rendered frames rendered by the other machines? I want to use all of my machines’ CPU power plus all of the CoreDuo2’s CPU power to render the job as quickly as possible. What’s the best way to do this?

That said should I buy Nucleo Pro or settle for Nucleo?

Thanks guys, any help greatly appreciated.

Hey Steve, nice piece of software man!! 🙂

No, Nucleo/ Nucleo Pro use background instances of AE itself, they are not meant to manage the network renderer. XFactor would do that. Whether you go Pro or use the standard Nucleo, is entirely up to you. NucleoPro will also enhance your workflow while interactively operating, Nucleo will only speed up final renders.

Thanks Mylenium, but what if I do this:
    1. Use Nucleo Pro and set up a background render with the “skip existing files” option ticked in render settings.
    2. Start the same render job as a network render on the other machines.

Will Nucleo Pro see and respect the fact that those frames have already been rendered and so skip on to unrendered frames?

Will the other machines see the frames that Nucleo Pro has rendered?

This way I could have the other machines on the network and the Duo2 fully utilised in rendering the project. Would this work?

    Thanks,
    John

No, I don’t think so. Haven’t tried it (I barely ever use network rendering as we most of the time need to output QT files anyway), but from my understanding the background renderer does not work with this (Nucleo will dynamically adjust the render process to maximize output, not figuring in such options – it has it’s own “rhythm” if you will). The normal network renderers on other machines schould however be able to see already produced files.

Nucleo and nucleo pro both recognize “skip existing file” commands.
I’m doing that as I type this crossing my fingers to meet a deadline.

I am not using the network render/find folder commands.

I have run it cross platform between Windows/OSX/Rosetta/Intel with Windows installed machines all working together and I have had sucess.
Nucleo/Nucleo pro is worth its weight in gold when you use it in a network….

LOL – I was just scratching my head with a few developers here wondering if that work…there’s no reason why it “shouldn’t work” as long as you don’t use the network rendering “watch folder” method. You would need to manually go to each machine and start the render with skip existing frames on.

The only gotcha would be that it has to be to image sequences (as you need skip exsisting frames on) and you may have a problem with .PNG sequences (as we do some extra stuff there for dealing with a bug in AE with PNG’s).

As for Nucleo Pro – can’t officially comment as its not out yet…but maybe in a day or two…hint hint…;)
