If I wanted to create a Progressive SD sequence using DVCPro50 Anamorphic settings, how would I do so? Is simply setting the Field Dominance to None going to give me a Progressive sequence? Do I need to change my timebase from 29.97 to 24p or higher like 60.

My video is made up of stills and type supers only and will be distributed digitally. I don’t have images large enough for HD sizes, which is why I didn’t go with 720p. How should I set this up or should I just stick with the easy set up and stay interlaced?

Yes set the field dom. to NONE. Your frame rate is up to you. 29.97 or 23.98 if you ever play to go out to tape. More frames the smoother the motion but that doesn’t mean better. If you want a move cinematic feel go with 23.98.

If you ever go out to tape the video will get interlaced as it is output.

Well, it depends on what your final output will be.

Do you want the frame rate at 59.94p or 29.97p (p=progressive). You could do it either way.

I use ReVisionFX Fields Kit to do both conversions. RedGiant has a similar tool. Both are better than letting After Effects do the deinterlacing.

uh…I could be wrong, but I don’t believe progressive ntsc
    can be anything but 23.98.

at least thats what a dvd player expects when doing progressive
    output.

same for dvcpro 50 like the panasonic SDX cameras (doing a 23.98 edit today actually)

DVD spec allows 30p, and a lot of cameras can shoot 30p.

[Matt Campbell] “My video is made up of stills and type supers only and will be distributed digitally”
Then edit in a Square pixels sequence.
If you like the size of DV50 Annamorphic, then make your sequence 864×486 Square pixels (1024×576 in PAL land).
The field order of your sequence NONE. You don’t need to worry about interlacing anymore.

Hey thanks everyone. All the responses have been helpful. I thought I was on the right track, just needed the correct settings. I would have liked to do this in Motion, but I’m still learning the ins and outs of it. So far, love Motion. But yes, simple editing can be a pain.

    Thanks again to everyone. Cheers!

    Hi Matt,
You can do a very decent job in FC.
Use the easy In Easy out and smooth key frames.
you can also set “Render Motion Effects: BEST” and, off course, render always to a good codec.
    Cheers,

    Chris,

Just to be clear, the SDX-900 camera, when set to “Progressive” mode spits out to tape @ 29.97 with
the 3:2 pull down “baked in”. Quote from the ops manual:

Even when the camera is to be operated in the progressive
mode (30P/24P/24PA), the recording signals supplied to the
VTR are converted from the progressive mode (30P/24P/
24PA) to the interlace (60i) mode.

interesting on the 30P for DVD.

camera’s have a lot of shooting modes that are not
to broadcast spec for either VTR or optical disc playback.
    720P can only be 59.94 or 23.98, though my HD100U shoots 30P.

1080P 30 is not supported in the Blu-Ray specs oddly enough.
    but was for HD-DVD.
