    Hi Guys,
I’ve been asked to do an online in NTSC HD, First of all, I usually work in PAL or occasionally 23.98 HD for the US deliverables.
The spec I’ve been asked to deliver is HDCAM SR 1080i 59.94. I am using FCP6 and a Kona 3 card, however I can’t seem to find any settings for this.
Do I use 1080 60i which gives me a timeline and capture rate of 29.97? Or do I set it for 720p 59.94? I assume the footage was all captured at 1080i 59.94, I’ve not seen any of it yet as I start tomorrow.
One thing I have to remember is to change the SPG to fit. It’s currently on 23.98 at the moment.

    Any advice?

[Andrij Evans] “Do I use 1080 60i which gives me a timeline and capture rate of 29.97?”

Yes, because your deliverable was “HDCAM SR 1080i 59.94.” FYI, 59.94 is FIELDS per second. The “i” indicates interlaced, that means that the number that follows means FIELDS, so that translates to 29.97fps. Confusing, I know. And stupid.

[Andrij Evans] “Or do I set it for 720p 59.94?”

    NO…you aren’t doing 720p. You are doing 1080i.

The sequence and footage is 1080psf 23.98? And you need to output to 1080i 29.97? Well, at least you have the Kona 3 that can add the proper pulldown when you output. But because of the frame rate discrepancy, the IN point when you EDIT TO TAPE will shift. By how much? Who knows, it is random. You’ll have to do a few test outputs to see what the offset is and then compensate.

    Thanks Shane,
That’s what I thought it would be. No the sequence isn’t 23.98 (at least I hope not) The work I normally do for them is at 23.98 and I bet no-one’s thought to change the SPG setting.
If they’d have asked me before, I’d have told them to keep at 23.98 and added the pulldown for output, but they didn’t.
