NTSC DVD from PAL timeline?
Posted by Ezio Taranto on August 19, 2008 at 12:51 pmHi, I need to create a NTSC DVD (at least I think I need to, we work in PAL in South Africa and I am sending a DVD of our work to the USA), I have filmed and edited in PAL HD 720 25P, I now need to encode the video and create the NTSC DVD.
Will I need to encode the video as NTSC and create an NTSC project in DVD Studio pro? or can I use a PAL MPeg 2 in an NTSC DVD project? Thanks Ezio

August 19, 2008 at 1:44 pmNTSC DVDs needs NTSC MPG2s.
You need to do it in three steps:
720p25> DV PAL
DV PAL> DV NTSC
DV NTSC> MPG2 NTSC
You can do everything, but the MPG2 compression, in FC.
You only need the Nattress Standar Conversion filter.
Work with the best setting in FC and the result will be as good as in Compressor, and in much shorter time.

August 19, 2008 at 2:03 pmThe FCP route does not guarantee good results.
Follow this method:1:Export Your PAL Timeline as a self contained movie.
2:Convert to NTSC (same Codec as your timeline) with Compressor
3:Either convert to MP2 & AC3 with Compressor or let DVD Studio Pro do the work for you. -

August 19, 2008 at 2:04 pmThanks Rafael,
if I do the following:
PAL 720p25 > DVCPRO 50 NTSC (Quicktime)
Import DVCPRO 50 NTSC into DVD Studio Pro (Preset to NTSC project)
Burn DVD
Will DVD studio pro not convert the footage to an NTSC Mpeg2? -

I don’t think it will let you – you’ll probably get a message saying something like:
“You cannot use PAL assets in an NTSC project.”

August 19, 2008 at 3:52 pmANother way to do it is to conform your video to 24p (the sound will be pitched and slowed down a bit, but most probably won’t notice it). Then make a 24p NTSC DVD.
Export a self contained movie from FCP (720p25) then duplicate it.
Then open that duplicate in Cinema Tools and click conform and choose 23.98 from the resulting dialogue box.
Take that conformed movie to compressor and use an Apple DVD preset or make your own.

August 20, 2008 at 2:21 amI would suggest you to make the downsizing first, then convert to NTSC.
If you try to do it all at once, the filter will be applied first, then the downscaling.
Once you have your NTSC clip, you can convert it with STP or Compressor. Better this one.
I would have a look to the Jeremy’s suggestion. He knows all the tricks.[Richard Trier] “The FCP route does not guarantee good results.
“
This story is too old already.

I should add that the specs should all be set for NTSC.

Not quite as good as using the optical flow technology in Compressor’s frame controls tab.[Rafael Amador] “and in much shorter time.”
True

August 20, 2008 at 4:59 pmI agree with you Alexander. When you have to create new picture(pixels or frames) FC can’t do what Compressor can. But who can afford to convert one hour PAL to NTSC with best setting in Compressor?
