  • now that my cinewave card is obsolete…

…what are people out there recommending? We do a lot of high end corporate and of course like to have the latest and the greatest. The arrival of FCP 5 had us very excited but in the end very disappointed to learn that Pinnacle is no longer developing the card past 4.5. What are people using with FCP 5 and all the other new apple toys?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

Our Cinewave has made for a very nice bookend in our CD production music library for the last 18 months.
Black magic is making some very nice products, same with AJA and their Kona 2 card and like.
The one thing I miss most about the cinewave card is the ability to watch renders rendering 1 frame at a time. It helped a great deal in making sure that what was intended to render was actually rendering.
Check out the rest of the forums on the cow here re what card to get. People who have the AJA product speak highly of the after sales service. I have also had an IO for about 3 years now and find it excellent.
    Good hunting.

I ran CineWave for 3 years (used to host the forum here on the Cow), switched to the Aurora PipePro in April 2004 and then to the AJA Kona 2 in November 2004 when an HD series signed on. We now run two Kona 2 suites here and they just work extremely well.

Aurora makes outstanding products if you’re only working in SD. AJA makes outstanding products in both SD and HD. For an I/O solution very similar to what you had with the CineWave, you can look at the AJA Kona LH which is an SD / HD card with both digital and analog I/O.

The two big differences between the Kona LH and the Kona 2 is that the Kona 2 offers SD to HD Up-Convert and Dual Link HD. The LH only offeres HD to SD Down-convert. I actually use the up-convert all the time so it’s pretty necessary here.

If you’re looking at one of the new G5’s, only the AJA Kona LHe will work in those machines. AJA is sure to be updating the rest of their Kona line in the near future, but for the moment only the LHe works in the newest machines.

As a cinewave user for over two years until last week, I’d put another vote in for the AJA Kona cards. We just replaced Cinewave with a Kona 2 and so far it’s working great. The control panel app is very nice and it’s certainly been a pleasure to have genlock that works properly when you Edit to Tape!

I can anticipate using the HD to SD downconvert a good bit, but not the SD to HD upconvert. Would you mind telling me how the upconvert is a part of your regular workflow?
    Thanks for any info!
