  • “Novice”- How do I fix this color?

Hi, I taped an interview a week ago and had the camera settings set to “auto” which was apparently a bad idea for this camera- I don’t get it, its a Sony HD and its never given me bad pictures before…

Anyway, I’m editing now and the picture is horrible-the color is crazy, and I can use avid OK but I’m a novice at color correction and can’t figure out how to make it look better. I’ve tried just fiddling with it cluelessly but ended up making it look worse and undoing everything. Here’s a clip of the footage-can one of you “experts” take a look or fiddle with it and, if you make it look better, tell me what settings to use?

ps. Its the Girl talking with the purple shirt and glasses who’s color is screwed up-you’ll be able to tell right away!

You have two problems. The first is that mid range, or gamma is too high. The easiest way to fix this is with curves but those are only available in Symphony.

the second problem is that the interview in front of the locker is too red (Look at the locker handle which should be neutral grey but is reddish) and the other footage is too blue (Look at the chalkboard and notice it isn’t white but actually blue)

Of course all of this is based on your internet video, not the original footage seen on a decent external scope.

You need to bring down the midrange in the blown out shots. (Interview in front of locker and the teacher) Then you need to white balance the shots to get a closer match.

if you are really novice to color correction
    try using the auto features.
in the color correction tool, choose HSL, in the 3 wheel pannel, there are buttons for auto white, black and balance, hover over them to see which is which.

also, in the color wheels there are color pickers, the left wheel is for shadows, mid wheel for midtones and right wheel for highlights, the color picker help you fix color casts in each area.
select the one in the highlights wheel and click an area which is supposed to be white in your shot, if problem isn’t fixed do the same with mid wheel and something gray. see that the auto fix shows you what it did on the wheel, so you can further adjust from there.

first fix contrasts with auto black and auto white.

there are some good free video tutorials on basic color correction on the Avid screencast
    https://avidscreencast.com/

    hope this helps

and BTW, there are curves in MC, they are a little less sophisticated than symphony, but do exist

There are curves in AMC- I just don’t know how to use them or what I’m adjusting. I played around with them but , like I said, just made it look worse. Thanks for telling me exactly what to fix- that’s a first step, at least, since I knew the color was wrong-just not what is was. Now, I just need to try to go about fixing it. With my limited knowledge and based on what people tell me here…

I’ll try this- and thanks for the step by step. That doesn’t work , I look for tutorials. Problem with tuts are that they take long and I’m on a deadline, also, not knowing exactly what in my shot needed to be adjusted, it would be hard to find the right tut specific to my problem. Sure wish there was a way to make a clip down loadable to you guys here so you could “fix” it and just tell me what you did 🙂
