Notebooks, Express Pro HD and DVCPRO HD capture
Posted by Julie Marzac on May 5, 2005 at 4:03 amI’ve read the Avid system requirements for Express Pro HD and it appears DVCPRO HD can be captured and edited with software only. On a notebook computer? Is this possible? Will Avid Express Pro HD likely support all the frame sizes and frame rates included with the new Panasonic HVX200 camera?

May 5, 2005 at 11:27 amThe recommeded laptop for Xpress Pro 5.1 will support direct FireWire capture of DVCPRO 100. The 5.1 release also supports editing directly off of P2 cards. It is the plan that all formats will be supported for the HVX200.

I have read more on the AVID discussion forums and even a customer support person said that while some people are reporting sucesss capturing DVCPRO 100 with the AJ-HD1200A deck, there is currently no deck that is supported for firewire capture into XPress PRO HD.
As for the HVX200, I found this in a press release:
Avid was one for the first companies to support both Panasonic’s DVCPRO HD and the P2 series of products, so we are excited to see these two technologies coming together with the launch of the handheld P2-HD AG-HVX200,” says Chas Smith, general manager of Avid Video. “Given our knowledge and experience around these formats, we expect to deliver support in Avid products right around the time of the new camera’s debut.

May 8, 2005 at 2:51 pmThe P2 card already exists with other Panasonic cameras and is supported with v.5.1 of Xpress Pro and Adrenaline 2.1 as I mentioned. It is being used in news and in quick turnaround type programming.
Support for the HVX200 camera cannot happen until the camera ships, but the technology is only a transport medium and has nothing to do with the camera or the format that sits on the disc.
As far as success of DVCPRO capture over FireWire, I can only say that the supported laptops when tested in house can capture directly from FireWire. Playback and editing performance may vary depending on speed of drive, the number of video tracks etc, but this is different that a single capture stream.
