My endless search for the perfect graphics/video editing notebook has left me fussing over details and specs that may be unimportant in the long term.

Bottom line, I want something powerful, future ready, and portable enough to not be lugging around an 8 pound beast. Oh yeah, matte screen is important!

I have been thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro, but am having difficulty justifying the cost to a better graphics card (and yes I am keeping it 15″ for portablity), not to mention that CS3 is not yet configured to support openGL for Macs.

Can anyone tell me if having a graphics card with 128meg vs. 256meg of ram will make my After Effects life any easier? Is the difference worth $500? Any other notebooks worth looking into?

    Thanks!

The graphics card alone is not worth the price jump on the Macbook Pros, but what DOES make it worthwhile is that Final Cut Studio 2 will not work on standard Macbooks due to the lower-end graphics card. If future-proofing is your goal, you should go with the Pro. Whatever you choose, I would strongly recommend going with one of the Macbooks. Being able to install XP via bootcamp makes it a dual-purpose machine that can, in effect, run any app you happen to need. They are also speedy, lightweight and well built.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I would definitely go with the MacBook Pro, and from stories I am hearing, openGL may not be that much of an important factor for AE.

OpenGL really hasn’t been very well implemented in After Effects as of yet. It can be pretty nice for certain situations, but overall I think there are more important factors to consider, like having as much RAM as possible.
