Okay here is the setup. I set up a 3D Environment where the camera fly by this clock. Well that’s the simple part.

3d stroke is a 3d application where it’s a solid right? so if i turn it into a 3d layer and then why is it still in a flat 2d surface. IM NOT UNDERSTANDING THIS AT ALL.

i was hoping that the layer that I created beccomes a solid, as i move around it.

    im really confused, please help.

    Hey,
Something to note, no layer in After Effects solid with an effect or not, can occupy the Z-axis and make it real 3D. 3D stroke for example gives the illusion of three dimensions inside the layer, and you need to use the transform controls in the Effects Control window (F3) to make it look like it has a Z-axis depth.

All that can exist in AE’s 3D world is flat planes. That’s it. Each layer is a flat plane.

When you apply a 3D-like effect such as Shatter or 3D stroke to a layer, you are creating a “movie” of a 3D effect that “plays” on that flat layer. In cases where the 3D effect has a “comp camera” control, AE changes how that 3D movie looks, by cleverly tying the effect’s camera motion to AE’s camera motion.

That’s why you should leave the layer as a 2D layer: so the viewer can see it “flat-on” and the illusion is maintained. Otherwise you’ll see an angled flat screen, and the illusion is lost.

To re-phrase: 3D objects with depth cannot exist in AE. Unless you take a bunch of those flat planes and construct an object out of them.
