I Can’t Capture from DV deck through AJA Io box!

I have 5 different formats running through a switcher, to an AjA IO box, then in to Final Cut.
The system was set up for my client by an independent engineer who can’t be contacted.
I’m a story editor, heired for a few days, and I’m trying to make sense of this system

I can’t capture any video from the Sony DV deck. . . .(It’s mini a DV tape Standard Def NTSC)

The DV deck is playing fine.
    The switcher is patched correctly.
I’ve got keyspan . . . . and deck control is working fine . . . . video is then patched from the switcher out to a client monitor and looks fine.
Audio is going through a Makie mixer . . . the AjA and Final Cut are reading the audio fine.
BUT NO VIDEO IS COMING IN TO FINAL CUT.

    CAPTURE SETTINGS
    “Device control” set to “keyspan”
    “Capture/Input” on AjA IoHD 525 29.97 DV . . . I’ve also tried it on AjA IoHD 525 8 Bit, and AjA IoHD 525 Apple ProRes 422

    AJA CONTROL PANEL
I went in to the AJA control panel and under “input” it’s saying there is no video signal on any of the incoming channels.

I’ve mostly tried it with the “Analog” button selected . . . . then in the Analog pull down menu either Component (beta), OR Component (SMPTE EBU N10).

Under the format tab the Primairy (Native ) format is grayed-out, and it says “IoHD in use by Final Cut Pro”

    Any Suggestions.
Since audio is being recognized fine, deck control works, it comes out of the switcher to the client monitor and looks fine, It seems this is a software setting (either in “Capture Settings” or “AJA Control Panel”.
    Am I correct??
    Any Suggestions??

Just run a firewire cable between the deck and your Mac and bypass the switcher.

[Rory Keenan] “I went in to the AJA control panel and under “input” it’s saying there is no video signal on any of the incoming channels. “

That’s why you have no video coming into FCP. If there’s no video to the Io then there’s not going to be anything in FCP either.

Might just want to bypass the switcher and go with a firewire cable directly from the deck to the Mac.

I may try running the DV deck straight to the CPU via Firewire
The deck is a Sony DSR-60.
I’m going to go around the back of the deck and see if there is a Firewire port.

The thing is I’d like to get the switcher system running (as the client is getting annoyed that he spent money on this configuration and it’s not working . . . and annoyed that I’m not getting it to work, even though I’m not the engineer who set it up.)

He says it worked just fine when the engineer set it up.

Does anyone have any ideas on why I’m not getting video signal to the AJA control panel??

I assume you want to capture the output from the switcher. You say the switcher output is going to the client monitor. Is it also going to the AJA? What’s connected to the AJA video input? How’s the audio getting to the AJA?

From memory, the DSR60 can have an optional SDI board. Perhaps the AJA needs to be looking for SDI from the switcher. Is the switcher routing analog or SDI?

What is the output format of your switcher? Is it an analog or a digital output? Composite or component? Find out just what is coming out of the switcher and hook it up to the correct inputs on the IO based on the format-analog composite, Y/C, component or SDI video. You should be able to open up the IO control panel, set the inputs to the correct settings and see video. Final Cut may over ride these settings but it will tell you if the video is getting into and thru the IO. Try doing this with FCP not running. Now if you see video thru the IO, open up FCP and go to the capture presets and select the AJA one that matches your switcher’s output format. Open L&C and see what shows. Make sure that you have both audio AND video selected for capture. I have a suspicion that you are not selecting the proper IO format to capture (or feeding the IO the wrong inputs based on the switcher’s output format) and that’s why you have no video. Check this and post back.
