  • Normal speed to slow motion – smooth transition?

Posted by Chris Klimek on February 21, 2011 at 7:08 am

Sometimes I want a piece of movie to go regular speed and then suddenly slow down using slow mo (control+extend/drag) but the difference in speed is abrupt. How can I have a gradual yet quick slowdown/transition to from regular to slowmo’ed clip?

Use the Velocity envelope to give you that exact effect
you are looking for (right click the video on the timeline,
go to “insert/remove envelope” and select “velocity”).
Then you have a green line running thru the footage, that
is what you manipulate by adding points to achieve what
you want.(do some reading on it).

You didnt mention earlier that you were using
    Vegas HD Platinum….Unfortunatly, the Velocity
Envelope feature is only available in the
    professional version of Vegas.

Thanks a lot Steve, bad news for me I guess. Oh well, one more reason to start thinking about FCP!

The grass is not any greener on the other side Chris,
    take my word for it.

thanks for your advice Steve! much appreciated! So far, I’ve battled all the issues by myself, but knowing this forum and some great people in it is very comforting!

I have another question but I guess it requires a new topic so I’ll go start one.

have you tried to copy the section that you want to slow down and put it in a new track and make that track slow down and then jump back to the original track. I think it will work, not sure how seamly it will be.

    my box is: OS=windows 7/64bit, CPU=AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T, MEMORY= 9 MB, VID CARD=RADEM 5770 1024, HD= 1TB

That sounds like a great idea Louis. Perhaps use the clip in “video overlay”? and let it blend in? Maybe that would work. Regardless, it’s where you become “creative” and use different techniques. Good luck Chris.
