    Hello,
Been learning it for about a week. Massive head contusions starting to heal, thanks for asking. Stored up some misc. questions…

    1. Maxon download docs has a ref manual and a quickstart guide – is there a user manual out there somewhere? In a related question, I can’t get many of the Structure/Function tools to work – is there a good book/website that can show me one (all I’m asking for is one) example (with all the clicks and settings) that works? Wow, I got through that without cursing.
    2. Any way to reduce poly count (subdivide won’t take negative numbers)?
    3. What do the little green/red dots in the Object Browser mean? And the little green checkmark means it’s a polygon?
    4. Is there a way to line up obj’s (e.g. put a cube on a floor)?
    5. Default grid size is 200m – is there a way to change the default. And the default cube size?
    6. Does the real product come with a texture lib? If not (or even if so), what’s a good place to find free or reasonably priced texture maps and procedural textures for c4d?

The tools are tough to learn, but very precise. I used to be a software developer – this program is a really complex/interesting intersection of object-oriented programming, math/geometry, and user interface.

    Thanks for listening.

the manual is html based and only viewable inside R10 – from the “help” menu at the top left. If for some reason you don’t find it there, it may need to be installed, and is available from the maxon website (follow the install instructions).

As far as your questions go – I think it might be best to advise you to find the docs and try to get the basics down on your own – all of your questions are answered in the manual.

…but here are the short answers:
    2 – polygon reduction tool
3 – the dots refer to visibility in viewport and at render time
    4 – many ways
    5 – yes
6 – some, countless places to get more, mostly free (but you should just learn to make your own)

    Hello Mike,
Thanks, kind of. Thanks for the ones you did actually answer. I’m actually laughing now – “yes”, and “many ways”, gotta tell you, not really answers. I’m thinking you had trouble sharing your toys as a kid.

the reason I said “yes” and “many ways” is that your questions are so broad that one could go on and on about how to accomplish what you are asking – there is no one answer. Grab the manual, learn the basics.

Learning 3D (like any app) is a linear process, where you learn the basics and slowly build your knowledge of how the tools work – so you don’t ask questions that could be accomplished 20 different ways using 20 different tools.

So, in this case, “yes” and “many ways” is as specific as I can get without asking you many more questions and maybe seeing the scene file to understand which approach is the best.

    Hello Mike,
This will be my last post to you on this subject.

You’re wrong on so many different levels. Let me begin…
“Learning 3D (like any app) is a linear process”
Hahahahaha – maybe for you, not for me. Especially with something as big and complex as c4d (or any major 3d app). I learn a couple of basic things, start to see the links between other parts of the pgm, feel good, bang into walls, feel bad, search the inet for tutorials – ANYTHING BUT LINEAR (for me).

AND, c4d has this hidden matrix of interaction between the mode (point, line, etc.), the holy trinity tools (mv, scale, rotate), and the rest of the menu items & windows. It’s not terribly well explained in the docs I’ve seen.

“slowly build your knowledge of how the tools work”
Sorry my friend, I don’t have the time.

“you don’t ask questions that could be accomplished 20 different ways using 20 different tools.”
Hahahahaha – I reserve the right to ask any question. And, if I’m learning, how would I know it could be done 20 different ways?!?!?

Now, let’s review your answers again.
    1. I was looking for a user manual. The c4d html docs calls itself a Reference Manual (goto “Help (it’s on the right side of the top menu bar), then click on “Help.). Since your “help”, I did go out and get a book, though (c4d 9/9.1 hb), pretty good.

Also, the ref man reads like it’s written by Hanz and Franz. I bet it’s a translation (although the humor is ok and unexpected).

    4. “many ways” to put a cube on a floor?!?!? Uh-huh. 20 ways? Doubtful. Plus, when learning, sometimes one (very basic way) is helpful to get started, and can help.

    5. “yes” to default grid size/default cube size. Found the default grid size in viewport/config. 20 ways? Doubtful.

I just can’t believe you even bother to defend yourself. Next time you feel the urge to answer a noob question ask yourself – am I going to be a pr-ck and not give any information? If so, don’t start typing.

    Have a nice day.

    Jon
