if i copy a clip (command c), what is the key command to drop
it into the timeline at the cursor position? how do i switch
this command between ripple and overwrite? or is it a different
command? is there a printable list somewhere of default keyboard
    commands?

    thanks,

Command (open apple) “v” is the paste command. By defauldt FCP will paste it into the tracks that the original clip is in. I don’t think you can specify an overwrite or insert with a paste. An easy way to do that is to position your cursor where you want the clip, click and drag the original clip into the canvas onto either the insert or overwrite overlays. I think there is a list in the PDF manual of the keyboard shortcuts. Or you can open the keyboard layout in the “tools” menu to see what each key does ( it has a nice search feature also).

thanks scott. is there a way i can just drag a clip from one place to another and have it ripple? what has to be selected, or how do i get into the proper mode to do this? sorry for the noob-ness.

shift-v will do an insert edit.

If you want to move it around once it’s in the timeline, you can start to drag it, then press the OPTION key, and the arrow will acquire a curve. Then you can drop it in wherever you want and the timeline will ripple to accomodate it.
