    Hi,

We’re having a weird issue on a film I’m working on as assistant editor. This is for a feature shot on 35mm and telecined. We’re editing in FCP at 29.97 non drop. The sound is recorded to hard disk as BWF files with 30fps timecode (48KHz). The sound guy then does a pulldown so it will sync with the 29.97 TK. He does this in Pro Tools, and he says his settings are non drop in and non drop out. He outputs the files as AIFs.

However, when I import the sound files into my FCP project, the sound appears as drop frame! I have set every single thing to non drop: capture presets, sequence presets, etc. Even if I import the audio files into a 24fps project, they appear as 29.97 drop frame. I can modify the timecode, of course, but this is extremely time-consuming. Unfortunately the drop-non drop difference between my sound and image makes any subclips I make from synched clips go out of sync.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!!

Import all your sound files into FCP, get them all highlighted, right click on your Media Start, select “non-drop”. It will switch them all in one swoop

Hmm… could not get that to work on my laptop (have FCP 5 still on here), but will try at work tomorrow with 6.0.2. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK, I tried it successfully, but did notice one detail: doing that only changes how the timecode is displayed in the browser (still useful), but not the timecode assignation of the audio itself. To change that you have to use Modify > Timecode.
