  • Non-overlapping borders/strokes with layered Shape Layers?

Posted by Eric Chard on January 31, 2021 at 9:10 pm

I’m animating the classic “Ikegai” Venn diagram, using shape layers. These are 4 colored circles with white borders. While I want the color fills to overlap and affect each other, I want the white borders to ignore the layer stacking order and always appear 100%, no matter where they are in the stacking order and what’s overlapping them.

Can this be done without adding a lot of parented circle layers that would track the position of “their” fill layers?

Can you use an Add or Screen blend mode to accomplish the layering you want?

You can assign different blend modes for fill and strokes inside the shape layer. You could also have all 4 circles inside one shape layer.

Thanks: TIL that you can have separate blend modes for fill/stroke!

I wound up parenting layers with empty fills because me no mograph so gud. If I were to redo this I’d just use ADD for the white strokes.

    Thanks for the help!
