I’ve got some footage that I’m keying: Green screen, shot on DV, brought in with Blackmagic 10bit 4:2:2 via Component, using keylight on AfterEffects 7 Pro, MacPro with Intel chips. The key looks good, but people’s hair and black or white shirts are picking up a lot of digital noise. The edges aren’t the problem at all. The parts effected don’t even have any green spill. Is this a Keylight bug? (It doesn’t show up in the footage until after using keylight)

That noise is likely compression artifacts in the green channel that get removed by applying the Keylight effect (leaving ‘holes’ in the footage). I’ve heard tell that you should de-noise your footage first. Just tell. I’ve never done it myself. Maybe there’s something in the forums about it.

Just curious, is there really a benefit to bringing DV footage in at 10bit 4:2:2?

My experience with DV being captured via firewire is that the footage ends up with a lot of digital noise that you don’t notice until you do something like keying. The noise will prevent you from getting good edges. I’ve been coming in 8 or 10 bit via component on a blackmagic multibridge, and it smooths out all the noise.

Does it actually do a good job of upconverting the 4:1:1 color compression?

The BlackMagic card does a great job of upconverting from 4:1:1. It looks just like seeing DV being played off the original tape onto a really good broadcast monitor.
