“Noise” and errors on playback.
Posted by Simon Ali on October 4, 2024 at 9:19 amHi Davinci Pros.
I’m struggling to search effectively for a solution to my issue, as I just can’t see to sum up the error in words… but can anyone tell me what’s happening to my playback in Davinci Studio 19 (see image)
There seems to be “noise”, big blocky errors. Is my GFX card about to explode?

October 7, 2024 at 12:13 amI would guess your GPU is not able to cope, which may be lack of VRAM, or perhaps it is CPU and codec related. What are your system specs and what are the specs of your footage.

October 7, 2024 at 1:57 amHello,
I’m using a 2019 MBP – 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
And these are the cards/graphics cards in it
– AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB
– Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
It seems to be worse when using ProRes 422 materials (vs H264).
I also expect it is a graphics card problem as it gets worse as I edit, and as my machine heats up…

October 7, 2024 at 3:01 amIf you are using 4k or bigger footage, 8gig of VRAM is not enough. If it is getting worse as the computer heats up, then I suspect it is a hardware issue with the MBP which unfortunately have a bit of a reputation for having overheating issues.
You will get a lot better all round performance from an M chip Mac laptop including heat management and lower power consumption, plus Resolve has been updating with those chips in mind for Mac so all round performance is much better.

October 7, 2024 at 3:03 amI’d also add that you should set the preferences in Resolve to only use the AMD GPU, not both as there is a huge mismatch. It might just be on auto so try manually setting for just the one GPU

October 7, 2024 at 3:18 amHi @Michael
Thanks so much for your insight, very much appreciated.
The footage is actually HD (I already downres’d from 4K to have some vague chance of not exploding my computer!)
Yes, my 2016 had (and still has) terrible overheating issues. I think I was able to stagger along with my short form edits, but I expect my latest projects are just making more demand of the Mac.
It’s interesting to learn that the software upgrades have the new chips in mind, I suppose I better go shopping for a new Mac 😁

Resolve dev for versions 18 & 19 have definitely been favoring the M chips including the iPad Pro.
