I’ve been on a shoot with the HVX-200; a lot of our shots take place at night with near-total darkness in the background. There is noticable noise or compression in the picture – it is especially evident in the dark blackness.

A lot of these shots are special effects shot and I’ve been told that the noise/compression is going to make tracking and compositing difficult. Is the noise and compression normal? Has anyone dealt with special effects and P2 footage? Any help would be awesome.

Well you have to be realistic- this is not a Handycam with Nightshot. If you don’t light your shots you’re going to get noise on any camera and the HVX is no exception. Have you considered shooting day for night instead if proper nighttime lighting- like HMIs, Muscos, etc are out of your budget.
