No video with MP4
Howdy folks! My Sony Vega Pro 8 is giving me grief. I recorded an HD 1920×1080 MP4 video on my new cell phone, and want to drop it into Vegas so I can make some moooooooovie magic. When I drop it on the timeline, I get the audio, but no video; just blackness. I’ve googled till I was blue in the face (dang that sounds dirty), but all I can come up with is I need a new codec. I have the latest quicktime installed, all my plug-ins appear to be here C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0\FileIO Plug-Ins and in order. When i get properties on the file inside of Vegas, I get this:

I’m not sure that VV8 can handle the latest of these phone’s outputs? Have you done this type of activity before, using VV8?
You might benefit from getting more information on that MP4 by having it interrogated by: G-Spot and MediaInfo. I use these free download utilities that give me more conclusive details on Media.
MP4 is an envelope that contains several and, different to each MP4, layers of audio and video. From what I’ve read MP4 isn’t as rigid in its layer determination as say an MPEG2. In which case I’m really not surprised that a fairly old NLE platform, isn’t up to being able to read output from a new mobile phone’s MP4.
You’re going to need some more precise intel on that MP4. Maybe you’d need to convert the Media prior to ingesting into VV8?

Thanks for the reply! Any suggestions on a program (free, hopefully lol) that can convert mp4’s? My ole faithful bink & smack didn’t cut it. i changed the file extension from mp4 to avi, and it played on the quicktime player but with worse quality. still couldn’t get vegas to read the avi tho.
