  • No Video when uploading .MTS

Posted by Mark Lynch on March 16, 2011 at 6:46 am

    I have: Sony Vegas 8.0, Windows 7 64-Bit

I know .MTS historically causes problems (choppiness, etc) but when I import my AVCHD .MTS videos into Vegas, I get the audio, but no video. What can I do to fix this? This is my first time using a AVCHD camera rather than DV, so I have no first hand exp with this. Do I just need to download a plug-in?

Thanks for the advice on this tricky format.

Are you sure that it’s really AVCHD and not some variant of AVC/H.264? What camera did it come from? Vegas Pro 8.0 should be able to handle AVCHD. I would first make sure that you have the latest version of Vegas Pro 8.0c. If that doesn’t work, then I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 10c and see if it fixes your problem but if it’s really AVCHD it should work with 8.0c.

Pro 8c sees my .MTS files from my TM700.

Yea, AVCHD support was actually added way back in Vegas 7 so Vegas Pro 8.0 should not have a problem as long as they are really AVCHD files. Some people have HD files that are AVC/h.264 and think that it is AVCHD which it may not be. AVCHD is a very specific subset of the AVC/h.264 specification.

Yep, everything says AVCHD (in the details, properties, etc) and the extension is MTS. I forget what camera it is since I rented it. I believe I have Vegas Pro 8.0a.

Historically my computer is just lacking proper plugins for Vegas to read a format (i DO know that I never saw MTS/AVCHD/H.264 on Vegas in any way before, like in Rendering options, even now I still don’t), so I was assuming that was the problem…

[Mark Lynch] “I believe I have Vegas Pro 8.0a.”

    Then that’s your problem.
Find out which version you’re running and upgrade it ASAP.

From the Pro 8.1 (64 bit version) readme:

    Notable fixes/changes in version 8.0b
    * Added support for reading 1920×1080 AVCHD video. 1920×1080 AVCHD files created by Panasonic camcorders are not currently supported.

    Notable fixes/changes in version 8.0a
    * Improvements and bug fixes for reading HDV and AVCHD formats, including support for additional consumer AVCHD camcorder files.

From the Pro 8.0c (32 bit version) readme:

    Notable fixes/changes in version 8.0c
    * Added support for rendering 1920×1080 AVCHD video.
    * Added support for importing video from AVCHD camcorders (File > Import > AVCHD Camcorder).
    * Improved HDV/AVCHD reading.

Okay cool. But will I need to pay for this again after I already bought 8.0? Or is 8.1 a free update download?… From the looks of Sony’s site, I need to buy the code…

If you have Pro 8.0a, then 8.0c is a free update.
Pro 8.1 was the very first 64 bit version of Vegas (and apparently not that good) and was an optional (and free) download for Pro 8 users.
Either way, it’s not going to cost you anything to upgrade to the latest version.

Mkay, I’ve updated, everything is working fine, EXCEPT (i know this has been discussed before) the MTS files are extremely choppy in the preview display, and it’s impossible to edit with. How has this been remedied in the past?

    Thankyou for all this help.

AVCHD is a highly compresed format and to edit it like you want will require an i7 computer. You can though, render each clip with the same name but as DV widescreen. This will edit very easy. Right before you render, right click on each clip in the project media tab and replace each one with the AVCHD files, easy since you named them the same.
Make sure when editing the DV files, your project settings match by setting it to DV widescreen. Then change it again when you replace them with the AVCHD to the same resolution as those files.

One way is a new computer as Danny said but I would download the trial version of Vegas Pro 10 before you do. Vegas Pro has improved AVCHD playback with each version and since you are two versions behind, you might want to see if a simple software upgrade is all you need first.
