No Video Preview unless Prefs trashed… anyone else?
Subject line says it all – I often need to trash my FCP Prefs in order to get Preview working in Capture window. Once trashed & restored – bingo – preview is back in capture window. (I use FCP Rescue, so it’s not a big deal, but would like to stop it.)

It must be something you are doing in your workflow. If you constantly bounce between apps that use the io, like AE. motion, soundtrack, whatever, you probably aren’t tapping the desktop in between and the io is getting caught up in which app to release the video to.

But the IO is sending video out from FCP. It’s only in Capture where the “preview” in the Capture window doesn’t work.

Before you log and capture, make sure you are choosing a fresh easy setup. Is the easy setup custom or AJA supplied? There’s a setting wrong somewhere and we have to track it down. Whatever is saved in your preferences is the right setting we just have to repeat it.

Using AJA setup. But often I switch to DV input & change to a custom. But before going back to IO I load an AJA Easy. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Is your dv deck and aja io split onto different busses? Do you have a firewire PCI card?

Hmmm…. I’ve always SAID split, but now I’m wondering – are the front & rear 400 ports same bus? If so, yes indeed on same bus. Though I always try never to have both on at same time (a no-no I know).

Unfortunately, they are. you can either get a firewire a/b switch (aja used to have one recommended on their site, but I’m not sure if they still do) or you can get a FW PCI card. You are experiencing bus conflicts. Another way to do it without buying anything is to turn off whatever you aren’t using and quit FCP in between. For example, with FCP quit, hook up your dv deck and turn off your io. open FCP, digitize dv. Quit FCP and turn off or unplug the firewire cable of your dv deck. Then turn on your io and launch FCP, choose an easy setup and away you go. If you need to go back to dv, quit FCP, turn off your io, plug in your dv deck and launch FCP. Rinse, repeat.

Hmmm… maybe I’ll make a little card I can put on the deck or IO that says “reboot FCP”… when I need to use either & move the card, it’ll remind me. Thanks for letting me know about the bus foop… always thought front/back were separate buses. Duh.
