  • No Video in viewer when scrubbing timeline

Posted by Jeff Brewer on May 20, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I often encounter an issue when I am scrubbing the timeline in FCP 6 where the viewer no longer shows video and instead freezes on one frame. The only way I can fix it is to go up and change to show luma and then turn it off and the scrub playback works again, but it doesn’t take too long to freeze on a frame and I have to repeat the process. Its just gotten annoying and I figure the wonderful people on CC might be able to assist.

    Hi Jeff,

If you ask me, part of your issue seems perfectly normal. I say this because the moment you break away from the “viewer” and scrub along the timeline you’re now actually working on your comp/sequence. Therefore, it’s your “canvas” window that should become active (thus why the “viewer” pauses until you return to that window). Now, perhaps I’m misinterpreting your issue here…when you say “timeline” are you referring to the timeline asssociated with the sequence and are your windows properly displayed so that both the canvas and viewer are visible on your computer monitor? Or is your issue with controlling the playhead position when scrubbing in the space directly beneath the viewer window (above the jog/shuttle controls)?

I’m sorry I meant the canvas sometimes holds on a single frame. My canvas is to the right of my viewer on the same iMac monitor and when I scrub the timeline where my sequence/comp is at with the playhead I often get these freezes on one single frame. Hope that made it a bit clearer, thanks for your help.

Ah, an iMac. Only one internal drive.
    That’s the problem.

Currently using the internal drive as a program specific drive and an external raid 0 drive is my storage space for scratch and render.

Have just spent two hours scratching my head about the same thing.

I am unsure if the solution is permanent but if it helps or provides a clue for someone else, then all well and good.

In my canvas options list I made sure the following were ticked.

    Image
    Show Overlays
    Show Title Safe
    RGB
    Black

It was when I changed from Black to White the scrubbing problem fixed itself. I returned the selection back to Black and all seems OK – for now.

I don’t know really what I’ve done to sort this out (or why I have had to do so – apart from the fact I have just installed a new video deck) but if it helps someone else, then my job is done.

    This is on a G5 using FCP5.

    Good luck.
