  • no video in capture – a videocard issue?

I recently purchased a Dell Precision M65 laptop with the intention of running Avid XPress 4.6 on it. I looked on the Avid website to ensure I got everything to supported specifications. The only thing I could not (because Dell didn’t have one available) was to get an Avid-tested video card. The one I ended up with was the NVIDIA Quadro FX 350M. When I try to capture footage, I hear audio but see no video in the capture window. The video is captured as a single frame.

Though I am no technical expert, postings on the Avid Forums clued me in that the issue might be the drivers for the video card. I downloaded a driver that would work with Avid and tried to select it through the Avid Utilities. The problem is that my computer does not seem to want to accept the driver — it keeps reverting back to the default driver. I tried all three of the Avid-OK drivers and they have the same problem.

Any thoughts? Is there a way to override the driver issue or would it make more sense to see if I can buy and install one of the Avid-tested video cards (NVidia QuadroFX 1400 PCI Express, NVidia QuadroFX 1300 PCI Express, Nvidia QuadroFX 1100 AGP 8X, or NVidia QuadroFX 500 AGP
    8X)?

Or do you think it might be some other issue? FYI, I am using firewire and tested capturing both on the fly and batch digitizing and working from a deck (DSR-11) and PD 170 camera. None seem to work for the video in Avid. However, they do work when I try to capture to the freebie editing software which came with the computer. And, yes, I do have the video button selected in the capture monitor.

Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Check your digitize settings. See if you have the ‘capture single frame’ box checked…

Also, in order to properly install a new video driver you must go into the control panel and remove the existing driver.
