  • No video (either just black or blue screen) when printing to video/Betacam SP deck

Posted by Bill Wilnheim on July 12, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Im working with FCP HD 4.5, a matrox RTmac capture card, and a Sony Betacam SP deck, model UVW-1800. When printing to video, the audio is fine, but there is no video. I either get a blue screen or a black screen. The video just isn’t showing up on the tape. What I’m trying to print is a 28:30 infomercial, shot in SD. I know this has been done before by people who had previously worked here with this setup, they just didn’t leave any sort of guide, information etc. when they left the company. Any help is greatly appreciated, I can also send you pics of the setup, screen shots etc. I’ve tried so many things and am desperate for any solutions.

    Thanks in advance!!

Unfortunately, i haven’t been able to find one that works, and I’ve tried many, including easy set ups made for use with the Matrox RT Mac

You are going to need different hardware.

the RTMac is not supported by FCP 4.5. FCP 4.1 was the last version to support it. The G4 was the last computer to support it also.

Thanks! However, we do use the RTMac to capture from the Betacam deck and it has always worked fine. Plus, the audio works when printing and it works fine with stuff coming in/capturing. Would the incompatible hardware cause it to have just a specific problem like this? Also, this mac is really old, so as much as I hate to say it, it might just be a G4 :p

    Yep, it’s a G4.

[Evan Robertson] “Would the incompatible hardware cause it to have just a specific problem like this?”

Absolutely. You can get much better hardware for much cheaper these days to accomplish what you want. Blackmagic, Matrox and AJA are the capture card/io devices you need to look into if you do this on a regular basis and quality is what you are after.

Yes you are using a G4 because the RTMac is not supported on the G5.

Thanks. We’re definitely getting new hardware and systems (the gear hear is OLD), we just needed to do this as a one time/one off thing. It’s a full 28:30 infommercial so tape was the way to go. Normally it would be electronic submission.

Looks like i may have to do just that. The show is all SD, with some old and some newer footage mixed in. Some of the original footage was likely analogue (maybe betacam, shot in what I believe is the early or mid nineties) and the other/newer footage was likely shot on DV. Anyways, I’ll definitely try that and which would you reccomend of the two? DVCPro 50 or Uncompressed 8-bit? I’ll do both but the system I edit on is very slow so I want to export using the best format option first.

    Thanks again.
