I just got a chance to load the upgrade to After Effects so I’m running AE CS3 version 8.0.
One of the major reasons I wanted it is because I was under the impression it would take 3d files, specifically files from Photoshop Extended which have 3d models in them. Much to my dissapointment you can’t actually bring in the 3d models like you can in Photoshop Extended. What was Adobe thinking? AE already has xyz coordinates. Why wouldn’t they create it to handle 3d models like Photoshop can? It make no sense whatsoever. It can’t even extrude text in 3d space. We shouldn’t have to purchase another plug-in or program, like Zaxwerks to do this type of stuff.

Even if they add 3d elements ppl would complain its not enough 3d options etc.. they are trying to stay in the realm the program was made for … but i do agree i wish i could bring 3d models into ae..

It still amazes me how little support AE has for 3D. I’m not looking for this to be a 3D modelling program but I’d like to see some additional support for 3D. For example simply being able to extrude things, especially text, into 3D space. Why can’t they just add that in? And also being able to rotate 3D models, lets say .3ds models, would also be great.

Photoshop is evolving to accept 3d models and that’s a 2d program. AE already has xyz coordinates…If any of the Adobe Programs should accept 3d models its After Effects.

Yeah…I can bring in a 3d model in Photoshop Extended, move it around in 3d space, change lighting on it, and edit the textures that are mapped onto the models but I can’t in After Effects? Hasn’t anyone ever had an image of a spinning planet that they wanted to fly around with a camera? Or nice extruded text to spin around in 3d space? It just baffles me why they only let you manipulate 2d objects in 3d space. I can get around some of that using displacement maps, but that’s not true 3d. Come on Adobe…BRING IT!

The spinning planet you can create with CC Sphere and then have it orient itself towards the camera or you could use something like 3D Invigorator to create a true 3D sphere and put a map as a texture onto it (or use 3D Invigorator to create 3D text) but it still isn’t the same as having native 3D extrusion support. Why on earth hasn’t Adobe done this yet?
