  • No search by source timecode?

I’m trying to emulate a really efficient workflow that we’ve used for several years on our Avid but it seems like it’s not possible on FCP.

Here’s the workflow that we use now. Our main source of material is a 45 minute sermon, digitized from tape. We drop the entire sermon clip on a timeline and create a rough cut of it. During the rough edit, we create a list of lower thirds based on the source time of the sermon. The lower third CGs are created from this list and imported.

During the final edit, the lower thirds are dropped on the timeline based on the source timecode so that they match the program content.

Now that I’m trying to port this workflow to an FCP system, there seems to be no way to search by source time. Am I missing something? Is there really not an option to search by source timecode in FCP? What is called source time in the canvas window appears to be timeline time. In fact, source time and clip time are always identical.

If any of you edit a similar type of program, I would sure be interested in knowing how you handle situations like this. If there’s not a workaround, I may have a really nice, barely used FCP system to sell!

Press CMD-F to open the FIND window. Click on the SEARCH drop down menu and choose SOURCE TIMECODE. Then type in the timecode.

I should have known that Apple couldn’t call search “search”. It’s a little clumsy, but it will work. Thanks Shane.

Since we’re on the subject – why is it that the timecode window in the timeline and the canvas will not show the source time? The time is the same in both windows with either clip time or source time selected and in any case it’s never the source time. Is this a case of another obscure setting being wrong?

Gotta turn that option on. Just like in Avid. Above the Canvas, that box looking drop down menu. Click on that and turn on SHOW OVERLAYS, then select, in the same menu, SHOW TIMECODE OVERLAYS.

Yeah, I’ve got that turned on. What I’m wondering about is the tiny timecode window beside the clock icon in the upper right corner of the canvas and the one beside the RT button on the timeline. Both have an option for showing source time but selecting source time or clip time always shows the same time which is the timeline time.

The overlay disappears during playback but these little windows stay active. It would really help my editing process to be able to see source time all the time.

    Thanks a lot Shane.

DUnno why that says SOURCE…it has always been TIMELINE. Left one is DURATION of IN to OUT, and right is source. And the only way to see the source is via the TIMECODE OVERLAY.

Sorry, Avid has a lot of advantages to FCP in certain areas, and this is one of them.

Thanks again Shane. I’m learning that each system has its strong points. If somebody could just take the good from each one of them and put ’em together…
