No saving in FCX…so how do we save different stages of a project?
Posted by Danny Mulen on January 5, 2012 at 5:10 pmJust like any other program on earth, sometimes we need to save different states of the project so we can revert to them if we need to, for whatever reason (for ex. sometimes I may wish to go with an older edit of my videos because they felt better than what I have now).
I understand it’s very Apple-like to say “eff it, we’re so intuitive we’ll save the damn thing for ya!” but how do we go about backing up different points in a project?

January 5, 2012 at 6:38 pmFor non complex projects* I have been editing right in compound clips in an event. I keyword them as “Sequences” and I duplicate just like I would in FCP 7.
The other way to make revisions is through auditions. Grab an entire timeline (or part of it), compound clip it and then duplicate as an audition.
If you have a complex project, then keeping your timeline in a project and duping that is the way to go with versions.
*Complex Project – at this point in FCP X 10.0.2 and on my every Mac I have tried, any “Currentversion” of a Event or Project that is over about 30MBs. That could be a 2 minute or 10 hour timeline. Once you start creating compound clips, or duplicating as auditions you’ll see the current version literally double each time you do it, and currently that nasty bloat bug slows FCP X down to a crawl.

January 6, 2012 at 5:21 amI have a totally unsupported suspicion here about why it works this way.
I think the Project library will eventually morph into a “video publishing” system. As you edit and revise, you publish to the PL. It represents the “distribution state” of your project. You want to work on an alternate version, you make a clone so that you don’t disturb your publishable master.
This approach is also why what we could do in Legacy, which was “select any range” and trivially output just that directly from the timeline is no longer as easy.
I may be totally wrong and Apple may never link the PL to some distribution system like I envision, but if they ever do, it will make X an amazingly powerful content creation/distribution system in and of itself I think.
And that’s also why I think the key wording is so focused on the Event library rather than exclusively in the clips themselves. Assets that reside in the Event Library can be used by multiple projects simultaneously – and only when they are “baked” into Projects do they become ready for distribution in a fixed form.
It’s a totally different approach from Legacy where the “publishing” of an isolated “cut” as a totally separate entity cut off from the program was the standard procedure. Now, in the Project Library, cuts are linked to the timeline and can be altered at will.
Totally different approach and one I think will turn out to be a HUGE capability in the long run.
(my fingers are crossed about this!)

January 6, 2012 at 6:00 pmI think you’re probably right. If the upcoming Apple meeting in NY does indeed announce a way for people to publish your own book… a system like you’re describing would be the natural next step…
