July 13, 2009 at 4:42 pm[Iain MacKinnon] “St Andrews’ Links?”
per a recent piece in the NY Times there are dozens of local 9-hole courses in Scotland that are much more modest, in some ways more “authentic,” and so low-key that they collect fees in a box, on the honor system. $20/day, which is some tiny percentage of the big courses. Sound good?

A nine hole golf course is a bit like eating just half a sandwich or dating just half of the Swedish Bikini Team. It’s a good start, but it leaves you unsatisfied.

July 13, 2009 at 5:01 pmMy local course, Barshaw in Paisley, is a nice enough course.
18 holes, no streams or bunkers but it’s narrow and it’s easy to lose a ball over a hedge!
Still… if you get there before 7am you can still play for free i believe. every other time it’s about £11 (approx $15 i think) for the 18 holes.I used to spend my time wondering, now it’s all used up rendering.

The Fereneze Club over the hill in sunny ‘bawrheed’ is a much better bet than that Barshaw park ‘pitch and put’
Just watch out for my son and his mates stealing yer balls at the blind 14th… and trying to sell em back to you!

July 13, 2009 at 5:28 pmI’ve not actually played the Fereneze yet.
I’m not favouring Barshaw over any.
Actually my favourite is the one in the place of my birth.
The Isle of Barra course in the Outer Hebrides.
that is only 9 holes but where else can you hit a drive with a propensity of landing in the sea or hitting a cow?I used to spend my time wondering, now it’s all used up rendering.
