  • No preview after logging clip in ‘batch capture’

Posted by Ilyanne Cauchy on May 2, 2009 at 10:46 pm

    Hello all,

I have run into a problem while trying to batch capture. Every time I log the clip I want to import and move on to preview and mark the next clip, the preview window is “stuck” on the last image. It stops rendering. The time goes on running, and the tape itself plays in the camera’s preview screen. however, it will not render in the “log and capture” window. The only way I have found so far to make it re-work is to shut FCP and restart.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this??

Thanks in advance for all your help.

What camera and format? How are you connecting? Firewire?

It’s a Sonny A1 and I am down converting from HDV to standard. I am connected thru firewire into my MacBook. I am using FCP 5.1.4

The bizarre thing is that this error is not consistent. It happens randomly.

    Any thoughts?

    Ilyanne,

the randomness is sort of weird, but you might be seeing the problem because of a down converted capture. It’s possible that the communication between your camera and Final Cut is getting cut off between the captures you’ve selected in your batch. Have you tried setting up a few clips to capture at HDV without the down convert? It might be simpler to capture at full resolution HDV and then use compressor (or similar program) to do the down converting. At the very least, setting up your capture to match your footage will allow you to see if the down conversion communication is what is causing FCP to freeze up — which I imagine it is. I know that capturing HDV and then down converting will use up more space and cost a little bit of time, but it will probably smooth out the process and possibly give you a bit more control on your down converted output.
