  • No Media Drives available; shot log only

Posted by Ross Spears on February 18, 2014 at 5:49 pm

OK, I have been using MC 4.0.5 for a few years with few problems. I am using OS 10.6.8 on my Mac. I am in the middle of a big project. I have been importing stills just fine for three years. All of a sudden, when I try to import stills, I am getting a message saying “No Media Drives are available. Shot logs only.” I have tried making sure that the permissions on all the hard drives are set to “read and write.” Does anyone have a suggestion?

I would truly appreciate learning what is the problem and how to solve it!!

Are you able to play media already on the system?
In media creation settings on the first tab are none of the tick boxes ticked (make sure filter based on resolution is off)

Can you actually create and delete a text document in a media folder?

    Dear Mr. Horridge,

Thanks for your reply. We have checked out the items you mentioned. First of all, we have no trouble playing anything that is already imported into the system. Secondly, none of the boxes in the media creation window on the far left have been ticked. As to your question about whether we can create and delete a text message in a media folder, we don’t understand the question! Could you rephrase it? What do you mean by a media folder? Everything else on our computer seems to running fine.

The main problem we’re having has to do with the Import command. Whenever we wish to Import, we now get a message saying that there are no Media Drives available and that only “shot logs” can be imported. When we shift the enabler window to say “Any document” then all of our target images appear, but when we click “Open” nothing happens. We cannot Import either images or music! Any ideas what to do? Somehow our AVID is not recognizing importable files when we try to Import. This just began in earnest a few days ago, although it had happened once or twice in the past.

    Thanks for your help!!!

    Sincerely, Ross

Another question: does it matter what settings the Import settings are on? We have ticked the button that says “Maintain events as logged.” This is under the shot log option. Under the Image option, we have the following: 1) Image Size Adjustment: Resize image to fit format raster. 2) File Pixel to Video Mapping: Computer RGB (0-255) 3) Frame Import Duration: 10 seconds 4) Field Ordering in File: Ordered for current format 5) Alpha Channel: Ignore 6) Autodetect Sequentially-Numbered Files: left unchecked

If any of this is wrong, I would appreciate knowing!! Or if any of the AVID specialists know anything about this problem, please, please, please weigh in! Or if anyone can suggest an Avid Specialist in the Washington, DC area that I could persuade to assist me, please let me know. Larry used to be a big help!

    Thanks, Ross

    Your import settings seem fine.
I’m curious what may have changed to cause this.

The normal troubleshooting steps would be:

Create a new Avid user and try with that.
If that doesn’t help create a new project and use the new user created and try importing into that.
If that doesn’t work try creating a title and saving that (does that title create media that plays?)

The suggestion to create a txt file in a media folder is to check you do have read write permissions inside the avid media folders

    Woo HOo!!!!

I tried your last suggestion first — because it was easier. I created a Title in my AVID project, saved it, played it, even pasted it. And lo and behold, now the AVID is importing again!!! What a relief! I was worried that I might have to re-install the software or something scary like that.

So thank you very very much for sticking with this and offering suggestions! Do you have any idea what we might have done, or not done, to have caused this problem in the first place? And why did creating a Title file prove to be the remedy??

    Thanks again! Ross

    Glad it worked out.
Creating a title was just a different way to get MC to make media on your drive so I expect it to fail but would indicate it wasn’t an import issue. The fact that it solved the problem is a bonus.
I suspect there may have been an issue with the creating folder MC makes and the last import that happened. The title creation may have flushed that out.

hey everyone – I’ve been getting this same “no media drives available” message while using “import” as well.

Weird thing is I have no problem playing content or creating/rendering to the my Avid MediaFiles folders AND I can import media by drag and drop into bins. It’s just the “import” command that triggers this message.

It took a short hiatus when I created a new user and new project but returned shortly there after.

I’m using external media drives connected by USB3
    AVID 8.2.0
    a MacMini OS 10.9.5

    Much appreciated.
