  • No insert editing with Firewire?

I’ve noticed this a few times. I’m mastering a show via Firewire (I usually go out SDI) and notice that my only option is to assemble edit onto the tape. That’s fine for spot work, but as I’m getting ready to make a 5 second edit in a 2 hour show, this is becoming a real issue. My client is going to balk at the notion of paying for 2 hours of work because of what appears to be a deficiency in the software (though I would guess that it has something to do with the deck or the Firewire spec).

It’s a Sony DV-CAM DSR-1500. I’ve noticed this on DVC-PRO 50 editing as well, even if I’m going out SDI. What gives?

Yup, it’s firewire. It doesn’t have the ability to do insert editing.

As for your trouble with SDI, that’s something to do with the deck, I guess. I don’t really know there, but when it comes to firewire then it’s the firewire that’s the problem.

The Sony DSR-1500 has a RS-422 port. You can insert with RS-422. Just get a cable and a serial port adapter and you’re in business.

Thanks for the advice. I tried going out firewire and controlling via 9-pin and it only resulted in a half dozen restarts and a stream of profanity.

I managed to kick out those new shots in D1 via SDI. There’s a slight difference but since they’re cuts it can stay my secret.

Hmm….that’s odd and should not be happening.
