Hoping someone here can advise me. I have spent the better part of my holiday digging deeper and deeper into a Final Cut Pro hole.

The first 4 or so hours are a wash I can’t get back. But just when I realized to give up on transferring some files from an old project — another BIGGER problem set in.

I went to open FCP and it wanted to know where to find an (“)file. I didn’t know what it was asking, so cancelled.

Then I tried to go in again and it wanted to know where to find another file, I think it was called – unavailable.

This time I think I hit continue (had I known the significanace of what was about to happen I would have paid more attention)

Now I can’t open FCP at all, it starts to open, then bam – nada.

So not knowing how to fix this, I decided to re-load FCP. I put in the disk and told it just to update FCP and none of the other FCP studio products, which all seem to be working fine.

    Nada

So I threw the FCP pro folder from my applications into the trash, then loaded FCP from the disk, still nothing. I can’t open it.

Any ideas would be appreciated. My editing skills and Motion skills are decent, i.e, knowing how to use software. But when something major goes wrong that doesn’t have to do with using the software, but more of a technical matter — I have little experience.

You need to provide ALL of the details of your setup to expect an answer for this. Please include your OS version and FCP version, and the machine you are using + media drives.

One possibility is that you are missing the font that exists in your FCP titles. Don’t worry about the “” media message. I’ve worked with projects for weeks with that message appearing every time.

The main thing is to get your project open and transferred to another new, clean project.

First, trash prefs by using FCP Rescue [goto versiontracker.com. it’s free]

Then use Tiger Cache Cleaner [goto same place. buy it. it’s worth the money]. goto Caches, choose MEdium Cleaning, and select all levels.

Be sure your Capture Scratch is located in the correct location and NOT to your hard drive Documents/Final Cut Pro Documents, as often occurs after a crash.

If any of this works for you, open a brand new project, set the User and System preferences correctly, choose the Easy Setup, name and save your new empty project. This will establish “known good” preferences upon save/quit. Then re-open it, then try to open your old project. If it opens, then drag/drop everything from the old project to the new one. Save/quit. Then double click on the NEW project file to ONLY open that one project. You should be OK from this point forward.

Again, there may be OS/FCP version issues that pre-emp any o the above advice, so fill s in on that first.

I couldn’t find FCPrescue on version tracker, but via Google, found a version of it that said it worked with FCP version 5, and hoped this was the same software you recommended.

I downloaded and unzipped it. It had 2 choices – trash and backup (with no explanation of what these choices did on the menu or with the software). I pressed trash, I figured at the worst it would dump my trash for me.

Now my FCP opens. My assumption is it trashed my preferences. Either way it worked and I thank you. I am pretty adept in using software but have little background or knowledge in fixing it. So your well thought out advice is very very appreciated.

And for anyone reading this who has not used FCPrescue, it claims to be a handy tool for erasing preferences set up by someone who borrow your system.

Thanks Steve and happy 4th! Cindy
