no firewire on new laptops
Posted by Kevin Mccarthy on July 3, 2011 at 9:45 pmI have been looking at new laptops and even the Sony computers have no firewire input.
Are there any firewire to USB-3 or SATA converters?

July 3, 2011 at 10:53 pmI just bought a Sony i7 Laptop and the specs didn’t show a firewire port, so I bought an Express slot to firewire adapter card. Then the laptop arrived in the mail and it has a firewire port.. Here’s where I got it, but they’re discontinued, at least from B&H Photo. I’m sure you can still find them if you sarch. By the way it handles AVCHD 1080 60p .mts files with ease on Vegas pro 10.
By the way, it’s even hard to find a desktop with a firewire port from retail stores like Best Buy. I set one up for a friend and had to buy a firewire card for it as non in the store had one. With AVCHD cameras that have flash memory and USB 2 and 3 drives, I see firewire going away.https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=vpcf13ufx&N=0&InitialSearch=yes

July 5, 2011 at 12:29 pmI had to do the same as “Danny Hays” did. I purchased a Firewire Express card to dump the video from my old Sony handycam to my HDD because my laptop came with an ExpressCard slot. I do not know if laptops today have the ExpressCard but they seemed to be very popular on most models when I purchased my ACER Inspire (about 2 years ago).
The great thing is it won’t cost you much to purchase a Firewire ExpressCard as they run pretty cheap online. For instance:
This Firewire ExpressCard is about $11.
Hope you find a PC/laptop that suits your needs!
