  • No effects working in FCP – help pls

All my filter effects have stopped working suddenly. I can take them from the effects menu (for instance a simple Flop) and put it on a clip and adjust the parameters even, but it is having no effect on the picture in the canvas.

I have been ediitng with effects like this all day long for months and so I am looking for someone to embarass me and tell me what toggle I have switched by accident… please

By the way, video transitions and Motion tab parameters are all working ok. I have already tried trashing prefs (using FCP Attic) but to no avail.

(Running FCP 6.0.5 on quad 2.8 macpro osx 10.5.6. Digibeta PAL captured vis AJA Kona as ProRes running off a GRaid FW800 drive)

    Prefs don’t affect this one.

The most common cause is simply not having the clip properly selected. you may be applying your effects to the Browser copy of the clip, not the one in the timeline. I do it every now and then. but without watching over your shoulder, hard to know what else to suggest.

Thanks for your response David. I am applying the effects to the browser clip ok – but your post got me thinking and I cut and pasted my sequence from the timeline into a new fresh sequence and that works fine now. Hooray. So I guess that means my sequence got corrupted?? Would this make sense to you?

    Glad you found a solution.
sorry, I have no clue what might have been the problem!

Strongly urge you to start working on a new copy of the entire project and, if you have the space, make a backup of as much as you can. Use Media Manager or, at the least, just make sure you have Time Machine working on your system drive where you store your projects and your autosave vaults.

the whole idea here is you have experienced an uncomfortable glitch. You don’t want that to happen again or, if it does, you want to have a fall back plan.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of saving, quitting out of FCP, and re-launching the project file. Make sure auto save vault is set to something more frequent than every 30 minutes. I have mine set to every 5 minutes.
