sorry for this potentially very basic question but i don’t even know where to start. since recently my fcp (5.0.4 on an ibook g4) doesn’t output dv via firewire anymore. the problem is that it says it does, nothing is “wrong” except the monitor is black and silent.

i can capture from a camera no problem, but output to the same camera results in the same black frame, even though the camera is recognized. i’ve tried it with two cameras and a standalone dvd recorder, same thing.

i’ve reinstalled quicktime and removed all third party codecs, and of course trashed the fcp prefs. what next? a full reinstall i guess but i’d like to hear from you guys first. any ideas?

    thanks,

    /matt

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
VIEW>Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

thanks, but i’m talking about something that has been working fine for 10 years since version 1.0 and just recently (pretty much after i installed the proapp update two weeks ago?) stopped working. i’m what you would call a final cut expert and that’s why i feel a bit silly asking this. 🙂

ok, i’ve reinstalled (by deleting the receipts) all the fcp, proapp and qt updates and still the same problem. since quicktime doesn’t complain it must be low level, right? maybe down on the firewire driver level? the port is recognized, the connection to the camera or deck is made, but no image is output. this happens with simplevideoout as well as fcp, and did i mention that capturing and device control works fine?
