    Hey there….
We we chunking merrily along using GY-HD 100’s and 110’s and using BR-HD 50 decks using Pro Res to capture to FCP, and the world was good…picture, timecode, we were smiles.
All of a sudden the Mac’s will not see the decks or cameras in HDV mode.

We’re using FCP 6.0.5 and the decks were assuredly brought up to latest firmware (did that myself after this problem started). Some of the cameras are NOT on latest firmware, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

In one instance I tried 2 decks, a camera and 3 different Macs (1 a laptop dualie Intel and 2 Mac Pro towers), changed firewire cables and ran through the liturgy of sequence settings and all audio/video set-ups I could think of….The Macs were blind to the decks and the camera…

Anybody have this issue lately?…I have had problems in the past but this was usually a JVC firmware/FCP software problem, but we can’t seem to find any thread on this one…

Any help is appreciated, we have 15 cameras and 7 decks that are just so much junk now till we figure this out…

    The Best

Are you trying to capture your HDV and convert on the fly to ProRess?
You can not do that unless you have a capture card.
Here you have the manual from our friend Chris Poisson:

    I meant the opposite.

Scott- First- Turn off deck and disconnect firewire cable. Turn on deck and go to deck menu and choose HDV (not auto or DV). Turn iLink down convert to off. Turn off the deck.

Quit out of Final Cut Pro (Final Cut cannot be running while you mount the deck for HDV.)

    Dump your FCP preferences.

Connect your firewire cable to a an independent firewire bus (no other firewire devices can be connected)>Turn on your deck.

Go to Apple icon (upper left of screen)>more info>firewire devices. Can you see your deck? Do not proceed until your computer sees the camera/deck.

If the computer sees the deck launch FCP. Choose Easy Setup that matches your recorded format exactly.

    Thanks for the info folks-
I’ll be trying to do what Jerry suggested today.

    Rafael- Regarding Pro Res-
We were able to do Pro Res capture for at least 8 months before this deck control issue came up. The best part of this was that we got matching timecode to the tape original versus the HDV capture which was always off from the tape.
While the file size was bigger, the timecode thing made a BIG difference in keeping track of large projects.

If it wasn’t supposed to to work, it definitely did for us!

Thanks to you both, and I’ll keep you updated on what I find.

OK, after some serious troubleshooting I found out that the JVC update 0109 seems to be the problem with the decks. I borrowed 3 other decks with the o1o8 update and they work fine.
Unfortunately, JVC does not post the 0108 update on their site now, so I can’t re-flash the firmware. I am waiting to hear back.

The camera information is more interesting and I should have not trusted the camera tech who told me they weren’t being seen either. 2 had bad firewire ports, 6 were working and 3 had other problems.
The tech staff apparently chose the cameras with existing problems or bad firwire ports as alternatives to the decks. They needed to be more methodical in keeping track of what they were doing, but as of now, I do NOT recommend updating the BR-HD50 to firmware 0109
