no color with VHS capture…
another one from the bonehead files…yes, actually taking video from an S-VHS camcorder. the footage has color, and the live camera shot even shows up in color on the monitor, but when i play a tape from it, all i get is black and white. i have it going through my UVW-1800 thusly: not using an S-VHS cable at all, but the composite video out from the camcorder is going to my ref in on the deck. all other cables on the deck are as usual. when playing the vhs tape in the camcorder, i do get a bit of flickery color banding, but overall there is virtually no chroma…
any ideas??

Composite Out to Ref Video in? What are you feeding the Beta SP with for video signal then? You’ve got to feed it S-Vid or Composite In from the SVHS camcorder’s composite or S-video out. Or am I missing something here.
Why are you feeding Composite out to Ref Vid in anyway?

i know it probably sounds unorthodox (maybe impossible??), but i thought this was how i had set it up last time for VHS capture. i have no blackburst generator, so my dealer said to set it up thusly in normal situations:
component cables from Mac/Decklink Card to compone. Y component cable to ref in (on UVW-1800), the left one, and on the Y input to the 1800, loop another BNC from that Y input to the other ref in (the right one). then, put the “genlock in” cable from the Decklink to the Video in (left side). with this config, i capture Beta footage with no problems. with this VHS stuff, i’ve tried the composite cable from the camcorder on both ref in’s (and only the left one gives me anything, which is virtually no chroma), and i get no picture at all on the . . .
oh…wait a minute. it helps to write this stuff out sometimes…i see that i never left my front input selector (on the 1800) on “Composite”. ding dong…and yes, putting the video from the camcorder on an actual video input on the 1800 helped a lot, too.
voila. me have color. sorry for wasting the bandwidth again. i have written down these connections and am storing them in a very safe place…

That looping through the ref plug is a bogus workaround. You should get a blackburst generator.
