  • no auto trace?

Posted by Zander on April 21, 2006 at 3:09 am

ok, so i just got finished attempting (multiple times) aharon rabinowitz’s super tight junkmatt tut. and found i have this problem, with all my settings identice, i can’t seem to get the autotrace new layer to create something in the timeline, or make a visible mask, im very very confused by it all

what i have is the autotrace layer created, but it’s as if there’s no media there, im not sure what to do?

    thanks

Auto-Trace traces a mask around a keyed footage (with transparency; alpha). You could send a screenshot of your comp and monitor window here, that would help.

and a close up of the timeline, any additional shots can be added

You need to apply the auto-trace to your keyed footage, and not on a Layer. By the way, it’s not geenscean but green screen.

In you timeline, just to the left of your layer, you’ll see a little triangle. Untwirl it, you’ll see “Mask”…untwirl that too and there you go.

Does that respond to your question?

Auto-trace is simply used to create an outline around a keyed layer. For example, you could apply Render > Stroke to it and make the mask a stroke (in the effect window) around your keyed auto-traced footage, etc.

well yes, now i get the trace and thanbk you BUT, im following along in Aharon’s demo, and he has a second layer, a solid created by the autotrace, i can’t achieve this, im so confused

for referance on aharon’s footage check the tuturials (the non ipod version should be posted tonight, as they are a week behind

and yes, i know, i didn’t title the footage, silly directors, what do they know right?

    thanks again

one of the options is to create a new solid with the masks called “Apply to New Layer” if you don’t have that option selected it will just creat the mask on the original layer.
