  • No audio when importing Handycam MPEG2

I hope someone has an easy solution to this.

I record videos using Sony HDD Handycams (DCR-SR62E).

When I drag the MPEG2 files from the explorer window to the track list window I have no audio file of the recording (issue is the same from both of my Sony HDD cameras). None of the 200+ files seem to work. I do get video in the track list, but a separate audio track does not appear.

The files do play video and audio in any of my other media players. Go figure?!

I can download MPEGs off the net and they work fine also.

I record at max res, but the issue still exists at low res over 2min recordings (small file size).

I had this issue with Vegas 5 last week and decided to upgrade to Pro8 hoping it was an AVCHD Handycam issue and version 7 and 8 could solve it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Try the File – Import – Hard Disk Recording Unit option.

Try renaming your MPEG2 file extension to ‘.vob’ and then drag ’em in. I had the same problem with my JVC .mod files.

    No change.

    This is weird.

    No change.

Tried it without Sony Picture Motion Browser loaded but that didn’t change anything either.

Renaming the extension to .vob worked for me.

    None of the above.

I presented all my info (printscreens and files) to New Magic who were able to replicate the issue. It seems that there is a bit of a glitch in Vegas. They heard back fron Sony in the US and it looks like Vegas 8 does not fully support the MPEG2 files that are recorded by these HDD Handycams. They are however compatible with Movie Studio Platinum 8. Go figure?!

Until I get a patch/update, I’m editing in a trial copy of Movie Studio. I have 24 days left (LOL).

I know this is an old thread – but this problem of no audio on MPEG2 is still around in August 2010.
I have just spent two days faffing around (it’s ok Mr Censor – that’s not a rude word, don’t worry!) trying to get audio from a brand-new Sony CX115E camera into Vegas 8.
The camera comes supplied with some (rather limited) software, which is little more than Picassa – called “PMB” (Picture Motion Browser)
You can shift the video into Vegas, no problem – but no audio.

    BUT!!!
And this is not made clear ANYWHERE in the software or the
(now very dog-eared) manual… there’s a little tab at the top-right corner of the “PMB screen”, which, in small font says:
    “Convert to MPEG2”
Click on that – and – Bingo!
All your once-silent video clips now have their associated sound!

Hope this helps after all this time.

(I expect everyone sussed this years ago – but kept it to themselves 😉
