  • No audio playback in PP, meters moving

Hey folks. I recently did a fresh install of Windows, and now I’m stuck without audio playback in Premiere. My main device is a Digidesign Mbox 2, which I used when I worked on Pro Tools, but now I use it as my sound device for Premiere. Windows 7 will output system sound (iTunes, etc) to the Mbox, or the motherboard, and I can see no problem with the Windows audio configuration. The Mbox (or default system audio) worked just fine before I reinstalled Windows and Premiere CS6.

If I go into Premiere and change the audio output device, it doesn’t matter what device I select (including Asio4All), there will be no sound output. The meters move. I’ve cleared the settings. I made sure nothing is muted or keyframed out. I tried older drivers for the Mbox. None of it has produced any results.

I did start to wonder if it was an Adobe thing or just a PP thing, so I sent a clip out to Audition, and it played back just fine in Audition. So, I’m starting to think the problem is in Premiere and nowhere else.

Any thoughts? I’m pretty close to performing a reinstall, but I’d like to figure out the source of the problem so I know what to do if it comes up again.

    Thanks for your input!

If you’re using the mbox for system sound then you have to, in Premiere, use it as an MME device. The mbox will not be available as the low latency ASIO device it could (probably) also be set as.

Post a screenshot of your current audio hardware settings within Premiere so we can eliminate it being any small oversight.

Alternately, see if it functions once system sound is released from it.

Hi Angelo, thanks for the quick response. In Audition, I can select the MME option, but I’ve never seen it in Premiere.

Below are three screenshots of my audio setup.

I tried outputting through my Matrox MX02 Mini, and the sound came out, but it was very hot and distorted. It’s the only output configuration that yielded any kind of sound, but it was still unusable.

Thanks in advance for the help!

OK, I think I’ve partially fixed the problem. After uninstalling both my Matrox driver and Mbox 2 driver, I reinstalled the Mbox driver and set the output in Premiere to Premiere Pro WDM Sound. That produces audio from Premiere. No sound if set to the Mbox. If I install my Matrox driver, we’re back to square one. So now, I’ll go bark up the Matrox tree for a while.

    Thanks for your input!

WDM is the same as MME, which is the same as system sound. Stands for Windows Direct-X Media or something of the sort.

Makes me think the ASIO drivers are acting funny.
