I have a AVI file saved on my computer that I need to edit. When I try to drag the file to the timeline, it does not carry along the audio with it. Only the video part shows up. I’ve searched around and everyone says to check my playback settings where I have switched several times from desktop audio to external audio. I always switch back to the default settings because I just bought the program not too long ago and I am new to this. Help?

AVI is a generic name that can contain various codecs. It is comparable to an animal, but what kind of animal is not designated by just saying I have an animal. It may be a rat or an elephant or a hare or a pigeon or a duck or any other kind of animal. Adobe just likes only a limited number of animals, just as you would prefer to eat a duck or pigeon over a rat or spider.

For AVI, the kind Adobe prefers is DV AVI type 2. What codec did you use?

Like Harm said AVI is a generic term. Usually the type of AVI that causes problems like you describe is Divx with MP3 audio.

Yes, I see now. The audio codec was an mp3 so I converted the whole file to pcm_s16le keeping the video codec at mpeg4. It made the file bigger but at least it works now. Thank you!

I am having the exact same problem. I know the video is in DivX codec, but not sure about the audio codec. I assume it is mp3 also.
How did you convert the file?

    I used Xilisoft Video Converter.

So would anyone be able to recommend which type of video codec/audio codec combined would be best for converting a file into that which would work best in Adobe Premiere Pro? I, as well, am having issues with the audio not importing. The video imports fine but the audio will not import. I’ve played around with other types of video codecs and audio codecs but have gotten nowhere.

Any type of program and/or codecs recommended would be much appreciated so that I can try them out and if anything changes.
