no audio in some clips
Hello, A few years ago I abandoned iMovie and put all of my video into FCPX. Today I was going back and looking at clips that I have not yet viewed in FCPX and several of my files play the video fine but did not have any audio. As I looked into the original folder I noticed that they were .DV files. I also find that if I open up these files in quicktime they do a conversion and play back with the audio.
My question is what steps do I need to take to have FCPX play the audio? How do I get the converted files back into FCPX? Do I get rid of the .DV files after converting? I have maybe 50-100 files that need to be fixed…..I don’t want to loose any quality in converting as these are family videos of my kids. I am a photographer and a newbie when it comes to video.

I’m not sure what to tell you. I don’t recall ever working with .DV files. Maybe try changing the extension of one file to .mov and see if that works. Otherwise, try exporting the .dv to .mov from QT. I’d use QT7.6 rather than the new QTX. I don’t know how that would affect quality, but if you try a file, you’ll see.

Thanks John……I tried switching the extension to .mov from .dv without any luck. It seems to work fine after the conversion but I wish I understood the root of the problem better. When I am in FCPX and I “reveal in finder” I notice that if I double click on the image QT does a conversion. Unfortunately I have to convert each file and then reimport them as it will not save into the FCPX bundle.

Just a thought, do the audio settings in FCPX match the file’s audio specs?

Where would I look to verify this…….I am a newbe when it comes to video.
